World event #16

Today Mexican and Colombian officials along with U.S agents found $41 million in cash hidden in shipping containers. Big packaging make it hard to X-ray and to probe open. Key points for smuggling cocaine are the ports of Buenaventura and Mazanillo. I think its great that people are working together to stop the drug trafficking which is a big problem in Mexico.

World Event #13

Today marks the beginning of a series of family reunions for families that were separated by the Korean War. The reunions will go up to October 1st on Mount Keumgang, a resort on the eastern side of the border in North Korea. Agreement to allow the reunions took place when North and South Korea held a 3 day meeting last month that was mediated by the International Committee of the Red Cross. About 200 families were allowed to participate in the reunions out of the 10,000 that applied.

World Event #10

Today at the United Nations, president Hu Jintao made a speech on climate change. Hu mentioned that China will develop renewable and nuclear energy, increasing the share of nonfossil fuels. China will be increasing forest cover to offset greenhouse gas emissions from polluters. It's great that China is taking action on the issues of climate change, especially since I have been reading about it a lot.

Today I read an incredible story of a young lady named Maria Toor Pakay who moved to Peshawar in the North West Frontier Province to to follow her dream of going pro in squash. She moved because she was from the tribal region of South Waziristan, where women are extremely limited. She is ranked 91st in the world and it is great that she is going after her dream with the support of her family.

There was a car bombing in Kabul, Afghanistan, that killed sixteen people including six Italian soldiers. The six soldier's bodies were returned to Italy today for their funeral. It is a sham that hate in one country takes lives of others in another.

World Event #6

There was a subway shooting at the Balderas station in Mexico City today and two people were killed. The shooting took place after police stopped Luis Felipe Hernandez Castillo from writing on a wall "this government of criminals". It's sad this took place, especially because that used to be a subway stop I used in Mexico City O.o

World Event #5

Oddly enough, a tornado hit northeastern Argentina. A lot damage was caused by the tornado and killed ten people. The Misiones Province Gov. Maurice Closs stated how this was an uncommon catastrophe. I think it was an odd event because tornados never really hit that area, they were not prepared for it.

Sadly in Berlin, Germany an 18 year old with an ax, 2 knives, and 3 Molotov cocktails attacked a school. Nine kids were harmed and two hurt badly. The attacker started a fire, got shot, and was arrested by police. I think its sad how these kind of things still happen.

World Event #2 9/15/09

124 law officials in Hidalgo have been arrested in Mexico for suspicion of helping the Zetas drug cartel in Mexico.  I think this is great news because it is about time those officials who supposedly help enforce the government and instead go and make things worse for the country are getting arrested. The Zetas have been a big problem for both Mexico and the U.S , especially with drugs and kidnapping people.

9/14/09    11:20pm

I read an article on ccn.com that was about a Pakistan recruiting female fighter pilots. The women in the article is named Gul and she talks about gaining more equal opportunities and treatments like men.  What I found interesting was how some of the women wear hijabs and others fly without them. I think it is a good advancement for Pakistan.
